Spanking is common punishment parent’s use in the United States as a way to discipline children. However, for years it has been debated if spanking is an effective and beneficial for children. Research from UAMS Division of Health Services Research has shown children who get spanked by their parents feel rejected and feel no love or acceptance from the parent who uses physical punishment. Children begin to develop lack of affection, indifference, and parents’ coldness. In order for children to feel accepted, warmth, and affection children need to feel that support and love from their parents instead of feeling neglect. For young children who experience spanking it increase behavior such as aggression, becoming an adult criminal and have antisocial behavior. Anti-Social behavior can be from being cruel to others, lack of remorse towards behavior, and disobedience at school. Having the anger built up the children can lead to potentially abuse their own children or spouse. Spanking may be affective at the time however, children’s development in the long term is far more important than immediate obedience (What Experts say Spanking). On the other hand, parents may disagree and believe spanking is the fastest and most effective way to discipline a child.
For instance, Fox News reported that according to research children who were spanked as a child were more prone to attend college, do better at school, and participate in more volunteer. However, it has not been concluded where the research came from. Parents who spank their children say it “does not mean they do not love their children in the contrary you discipline your child to what you want them to become in the future. As a parent you want to be respected by your child, before being a friend you need parent.” Parents who believe children should get spanked think that children need to understand that consequences hurt and need to have self- control. Growing up children need to understand that discipline done at the moment will help them become a smart and obedient individual.
Despite the debate 90% Americans still use spanking as a method of disciplining children. Regardless, of parent’s points of view parents should consider worrying about the long-term effects instead of the short-term discipline. If a parent was raised in a violent environment the parent should want consider a better life for the child. Many studies have shown immediate results, a child’s physical and mental growth is vital for this country and anywhere around the world.
